Martyr Michael “the Black-Robed” of Saint Savva Monastery is commemorated on May 23rd in the Orthodox Church. Born in Mesopotamia during the 9th century, Saint Michael abandoned wealth and worldly comfort to follow Christ in the Holy Land. Living as a monk in the Lavra of Saint Savva under the guidance of Saint Theodore of Edessa, he devoted himself to prayer, humility, and labor.

While selling baskets in Jerusalem, Saint Michael was brought before a Muslim queen who attempted to seduce him into sin. Refusing adultery and boldly confessing Christ as the true faith, he endured torture, poison, and finally martyrdom by beheading. Even after drinking deadly poison, he remained unharmed through the power of God.

Following his martyrdom, miraculous signs accompanied his holy relics, including a pillar of fire leading the monks of Saint Savva as they carried his body back to the monastery. Saint Michael’s courage, purity, and unwavering confession of Christ continue to inspire Orthodox Christians today.
