Born in Constantinople during the 5th century, St. Neilos was a disciple of St. John Chrysostom and served as prefect of the imperial capital before renouncing worldly life for the desert of Mount Sinai.

Together with his son Theodoulos, he embraced a life of prayer, fasting, and solitude. For over forty years, they lived in a cave they dug themselves—dedicated entirely to God. Through deep ascetic struggle, St. Neilos became renowned for his wisdom and holiness, offering spiritual guidance to emperors and commoners alike.

St. Neilos’ writings on the spiritual life, included in the Philokalia, continue to inspire Orthodox Christians today. His teachings emphasize purity of heart, ceaseless prayer, and love of God above all things.
