Protestants often misuse the Vincentian Canon (“what has been believed everywhere, always, and by all”) by reading it exclusively and copulatively—as if only doctrines possessing all three attributes explicitly and simultaneously can be considered true. However, St. Vincent of Lérins clearly intended the canon to be read affirmatively and distributively: these marks positively indicate orthodoxy when present, but their absence does not automatically disqualify a doctrine.
